Facilities for Special Needs Students |
“Çukurova University Special Needs Students Counselling Centre” was founded in 2007 in order to support our disabled
students. The aim of the unit is to detect disabled students’ academic, administrative, physical, psychological, accommodation and social needs and work to meet
these needs. There is also a representative for each department in faculties and high schools in order to provide communication and coordination.
A form is given to all new students at the registration in order to detect the special needs students at university. Besides, these forms are also sent to academic advisors of the departments
during the academic year to determine the needs of these students according to their disability level. Then the students detected during registration and the students detected by the academic
advisors are contacted with experienced psychological counsellors.
The university is working hard to become inclusive university to facilitate the living and educational standards of disabled students. In this respect, a specialist team detected the places on campus
where disabled students cannot benefit (buildings without disabled lifts, toilets or ramps) and then projects were planned and constructions and renovations have already started mainly on the
places where there is student traffic.
A project for visually disabled students has been put into practice and a special area for these students in the library has been founded. The area has been equipped with computers and other
devices designed exclusively for visually disabled students in order to create a reading and studying section for them. Thanks to talking books project, course materials and books have been
read aloud and recorded within a social responsibility project.
The students on wheel-chairs have access to everywhere on campus. All public buses running to the campus are disabled access friendly. There are still constructions and renovations of pavements
and ramps for students with mobility disability on campus. All pavements in the city center have also been made suitable for people with mobility disability.
