   ECTS Credit Allocation Based on the Student Workload Needed in Order to Achieve Expected Learning Outcomes

ECTS is a learner centered credit system based on the student’s workload. Student workload is not only based on the course hour, but the time spent on all other activities related to the course including but not limited to the attendance to the course, seminar, independent study and exam etc.

While Cukurova University had been using both local and ECTS credits of the courses as a standard of assessment since 2006, it began using only ECTS since 2013-2014 academic year. To define student workload, online and paper-based surveys have been implemented. Results of the surveys are evaluated under three titles;

1) Lecturer’s performance,
2) Teaching process (professional contributions of the course to students),
3) Student workload (inc. course, course preparation, and exam preparation hours).

According to the data retrieved from the surveys, ECTS credits and course programs are updated. Accordingly, 1 ECTS credit equals to 25-30 hours workload at our university, and it is mandatory that a student must receive 60 ECTS in an academic year.

An example of practice and estimated ECTS procedure at Cukurova University in a semester (17 weeks) is similar to the one below;

1 semester= 14 weeks + 1 week mid-term exam + 2 weeks final exam = 30 ECTS
