Learning Outcomes of the Course : Relates the history of cinema with the social and cultural history
Comprehends the culture industry in relation to the history of cinema
Reviews the relations between culture industry, ideology, technology and spectatorship in the context of the history of cinema
Familiarises with the main streams, movements, important figures, directors and films in the history of cinema
Reads the subtexts of films and introduces with critical film analysis
Comprehends the industrial, institutional and ideological relations of cinema and critically analysis these relations

Aim(s) of Course : This course aims to examine the cultural and social history of cinema and understand cinema in the contexts of culture industry, ideology, spectatorship and technology.

Course Contents : In this course the development of cinema since its begining will be examined as an art form, culture industry and social-historical narrative. Through readings of examples from European, American and Far East cinema that fall in the period between its birth and 2. World War, the dynamics of the relations between the history of cinema and social/cultural history will be examined.
