Learning Outcomes of the Course : Understands and interprets the relation between communication and history
Examines oral and written culture and theoritical approaches related to the history of communication.
Examines the development of the construction of communication instruments and the press, and relates the historical developments with the social structure.
Compares the development of the structure of the press and broadcasting movements in Turkey and in the world .
Discusses the development of the press and broadcasting, cinema, radio and television in a global perspective.
Discusses the cultural and political importance of the developments.
Examines the impact of economical, technological and ideological movements on the press and social structure.
Determines the importance of the media-politics and media-democracy concepts in this day and age.
Comprehends the current conditions and the importance of the information and communication technologies and guides his/her professional life accordingly.
Conducts a study in the field of history of communication and shares it by oral and written presentations.

Aim(s) of Course : History of Communication course as a basic subject of Communication Studies aims to focus on the developments in communication and to help students to gain a broad historical perspective and be able to analyze the impact of those developments at present.

Course Contents : The course content contains; the phases and historical development of history of communication, the structure of society in historic periods, impact of political movements on development, the importance of technological developments, teaching about the current situation and problems of media in the frame of political-economical and ideological structuring. The following subjects will be discussed in a historical perspective: the relation between communication and history, theoretical approach, society and correspondence (communication), the development process of communication, gathering news and broadcasting, printing of news in different ages, the emergence and development of the press, the developments in Turkey and in the world on ages, the development of the telegraph and the telephone, news agencies,freedom of the pres and the censorship, the developments on visual technologies and the constitution of mass society, coming into being and development of radio-cinema and television, BBC and the origins of public service broadcasting , political freedom gaining process of television, development of information technologies, founding of TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) and the private television channels, the relation between media and democracy, globalization and economical networks in global medium, the current situation of the media and related movements and phenomenons.
