Learning Outcomes of the Course : Analyzes the variations in the understanding of religion with a supra-sectarian approach
Explains the reasons behind the rise of the sects
Explains the formation process of Islamic sects as Kharijiyya, Murjia, Mutazila and Shia
Explains the position of the Islamic sects within the larger frame of Islamic thought
Knows, classifies and assesses the major sorces of History of Islamic Sects
Analyzes the period of Four Caliphs and Umayyad in terms of the Department of History of Islamic Sects
Knows the purpose and functions of historiography of Islamic sects in the early Islamic history

Aim(s) of Course : Having knowledge about the nature of the political-creedal sects that rose in the history of Islam as well as about the general characteristics of the conception of religion within which these sects are founded, and gaining skills of analysis, interpretation and comparison within the field

Course Contents : The period of four caliphs and struggles for Imamate; The period of Umayyad and first Shi´i movements; The problem of Grave Sin and Kharijites; Theory of Faith and Murjia; Mutazila and the first manifestations of five principals; The rise of Ashab al-Hadith and Ashab al-Ray
