Learning Outcomes of the Course : 1.Has knowledge about the legal regime applied in Turkish states before the period of Islam. 2. Explains the location of customary law on the legal system . 3. . Knows the impact of islam on Turkish law. 4. Describes the basics of the Islamic legal system. 5. Learns the evil-i and customary law applied in the Ottoman Empire to the period of Tanzimat

Aim(s) of Course : The course aims to explain the roots of the current Turkish law by examining the law in force in the Turkish states before Turks converted to Islam, and its religious and traditional origins, Turks’conversion to Islam and Islamic Law’s influence on the Turkish law; sources and implementation of Islamic Law and law applied in Ottoman Empire until the Edict of Tanzimat.

Course Contents : Pre-Islamic Turkish legal system, resourses, the Hun Empire and its legal system, the state of Göktürk and its legal system and the state of Uygur and its legal system, the religions that the Turks accepted before Islam, Islam in Turkish legal system, in a subsequent period, Islamic law, the public law and the organization of the Ottoman Empire until the period of Tanzimat .
