Learning Outcomes of the Course : is able to define basic characteristic of rural areas and rural communities, differentiate the concepts of rural and urban
can build relations between economic, rural and agricultural development issues
can evaluate the initiations regarding the causes and compensations of rural underdevelopment and discuss the alternative policies.

Aim(s) of Course : To provide students with theoretical foundation and analytical thinking ability by which they can understand economic and socio-cultural characteristics of rural areas, analyze reasons of underdevelopment and critically discuss activities to find alternative solutions to underdevelopment issue.

Course Contents : Problem of underdevelopment; concepts of economic growth, development and richness; traditional growth and development theories; measurement of development and characteristics of underdeveloped countries; role of agriculture in economic development; rural areas and their characteristics; definition, importance, purposes, principles and elements of rural development; role of agriculture in rural development and current situation in Turkey; rural development policies in the world and in Turkey; globalization and rural development; planning rural development
