Learning Outcomes of the Course : Understand the historical legacy of communism including the imposition of communist rule, the failure of reform and the collapse of the communist system.
Critically assess the democratisation processes in Central and Eastern Europe, putting particular emphasis on the political dimensions such as the adoption of a new constitutional framework, party system change, civil society development, etc.
Understand the changing socio-economic conditions resulting from transition to market economy.
Examine the impact of regional co-operation and the integration of Central and Eastern Europe into the European Union.

Aim(s) of Course : This course provides a critical assessment of the development of democracy in the post-communist states of East-Central Europe.

Course Contents : The communist system and post- communist system in Eastern Europe will be examined in this course.
