Learning Outcomes of the Course : To explain the purpose of History of Islamic Sects as well as its importance and relationship with other disciplines
To define the basic concepts and terms of History of Islamic Sects
To know, classify and assess the major sorces of History of Islamic Sects
To identify the factors that led to the rise of History of Islamic Sects
To analyze Islamic sects according to their mental attitudes
To know such Islamic sects as Kharijiyya, Murjia, Mutazila and Shia in terms of their genesis, historical background, principal doctrines and literature
To establish relationship between the Islamic sects and determine their points of similarity and dissimilarity
To explain the position of the Islamic sects within the larger frame of Islamic thought

Aim(s) of Course : Having knowledge about the nature of the political-creedal sects that rose in the early years of Islam as well as about the general characteristics of the conception of religion within which these sect are founded, and gaining skills of analysis, interpretation and comparison within the field

Course Contents : The content of the concepts of religion, sect, religious community and Sufi order; the relationship of religion and sect; sectarian typologies according to their mindsets; methods and techniques to be followed in the studies of History of Islamic Sects; the earliest sects in the history of Islamic thought; the reasons behind the rise of sects, their important figures, historical backgrounds, principal doctrines, sub-groups, the regions into which they are spread, their literature, contribution to Islamic thought and manifestations in today’s world
