Learning Outcomes of the Course : Explains the basic concepts and principles related to group counseling process.
Identifies basic helping skills of group counseling process.
Reports the similarities and differences of types of groups.
Distiguishes and reports counselor’s qualifications in the stages of group according to stages.
Gives samples for each therapeutic skills in group counseling process.
Reports possible problems to occur in the stages of group counseling.
Identifies suitable skills in dealing with the members causing problems in the group.
Adapts group skills according to the new conditions to occur in the group.
Explains and makes list of group rules in group management.
Identifies ıntervention strategies related to counseling theories and distinguishes them according to the problems.
Formulates counseling techniques and intervention strategies taking group member’s needs into consideration.

Aim(s) of Course : The aim of this course is to have the candidate counselors gain knowledge, skill and attitudes in the subject of counseling groups and their management.

Course Contents : This course covers both theoretical and practical subjects about psychological group counseling. In this course the students are expected to gain advanced group skills and knowledge intervention techniques based on the theories of counseling. This course contains the following topics: Speaking on the content of the course. Arrangement of assignments and projects. * A general view to Individual and Group Counseling * Basic Issues in group work. An Overview of the Various Types of Groups. Ethical Issues in Group Membership. * Therapeutic Skills in group counseling. Therapeutic encounter processes Forming a Group. Practical Considerations in Forming a Group. Group process: Stages of counseling process. Group Characteristics at the Initial Stage. Identifying client’s problems, goal setting and developing helping skills for themselves. Techniques for Inititating and Ending of Sessions. Transition Stage of a Group Characteristics at the Transition Stage Coping with problem behaviors and difficult group members. Working Stage of a Group. Characteristics at the Working Stage. Ending a Group. Evaluation of Group Process (Experience). Interventins for Dealing Resistance Therapeutically Dealing with Transference and Countertranference * Psycho-Educational Groups, Characteristics, Planinig and Managing. Intervention Strategies in Counseling. Affective Interventions, Helping Clients Express Affect. Cognitive Intervention Strategies. Behavioral Interventions. These indicated course subjects are taught theoretically, giving examples, with computer presentations , giving assignments, by dramatization, role playing, modeling, videos etc. with various applications.
