Aim(s) of Course : Traditionally, social scientists neglected the role of the father in child development. This neglect of the father by social scientists can be viewed as a reflection of a lack of interest by culture in fathers and even by fathers in their role. However, in the past decades, researchers have become increasingly aware of the need to broaden the theoretical and research understanding the patterns of father-child interactions. Consequently, there has been a steady increase in studies on father-child interactions in a wide range of cultural context. There is now a broad consensus that fathers are important contributors to both normal and abnormal child outcomes. This course aims to discuss the role of fathers in child development by understanding more about fathers and what their relationships are with their families and children.
