To have adequate academic knowledge about the definition and functions of language, grammar, and the basic concepts of linguistics, affixes, types of word derivation, spelling rules. |

Course Contents |

The contents of this course include the structural features of Turkish; word (root, stem, base, affix), word types according to their origins (native word, nonnative word: etymology), word types according to their structures (simple word, derived word, compound word), word classes (noun, adjective, verb, adverb, pronoun, conjunction, proposition, interjection); affixes in Turkish (a) derivational affixes, b) inflections, c) gerunds and infinitives, d) causatives, e) auxiliary verb; types of word derivation in Turkish. Word stress. Analysis of roots, stems, and affixes of words; spelling rules: spelling of some words and affixes ; the spelling of the nonnative words, situations where capital and lower case letters are used; the spelling of days and months; the spelling of numbers, the spelling of roman numerals; the spelling of sun, moon, and the names of planets; the spelling of compound words; the spelling of terms, idioms, and proverbs; the spelling of reduplications; the spelling of intensifiers; spelling exercises. |
